Background:
Asociación de Desarrollo Integral la Esperanza Toneca (ADIESTO) is a nonprofit organization representing 550 producers of certified organic and conventional coffees: There are 150 women and 400 men who are members of the organization. ADIESTO was created in order to promote the social, economic, and environmental development of its members and their home region of Huista.
ADIESTO carries out technical assistance, provides microloans, and strengthens the organization of business operations management for the producers. It also works toward marketing the coffee and providing greater leverage to the growers on the international coffee market. The most common varieties grown by the farmer members are Caturra, Bourbon, Catimor, and some Maragogype and Pacamara. The total estimated production area among the farmers is around 350 hectares of coffee—less than one hectare per farmer.
