Background:

José Edivaldo and his three sons own and operate this 480-hectare farm, which has 130 hectares of coffee planted. José and his 10 siblings grew up in a coffee family, and José inherited a small piece of land from his father. Now that his sons are grown, José is allowing them to take more of the lead on development and management of the farm, and his eldest son, Thiago, is in the leadership role. Thiago is insterested in constantly and consistently growing the quality of the coffee Da Barra produces; the farm's output is currently about 50% specialty-coffee quality, and about 50% more commercial, standard grades.

Efforts are undertaken on the farm to promote ecological conservation, including reforestation and recycling. There are 15 permanent employees as well as about 70 seasonal hires during the harvest. Coffees are picked and processed as Natural and Pulped Naturals on the farm; this lot is a Natural, dried on cement patios.
